Top 10 '90s Cartoon Theme Songs

The '90s were full of awesome cartoon theme songs!

The age of my youth was a wonderful time for the theme song.  Who can forget the epic glory of ABC’s T.G.I.F. lineup?  While the sitcoms’ plot lines were banal, the sweeping nature of their theme songs always got us excited.  Surely that dramatic, bluesy chord progression of “As Days Go By” held something greater than just Steve Urkel in store!

But I digress.

As great as sitcom themes are, nothing compares to those of cartoons.  They’re brief, kid-friendly, and put you in the mood for FUN!  Years later, when you hear them, you’ll find yourself smiling with the pure, unadulterated glee of a 6-year-old.  (Which is why I’ve personally taken to setting these to ukulele.)

Let’s revisit some, shall we?

#10 - She-Ra
This theme song has a sweet, gay-club/disco vibe to it, even if it’s a little heavy on the plot summary.  Twin brother He-Man gets props, too, but She-Ra was on my sleeping bag.

#9 & #8 - Tiny Toon Adventures/Animaniacs
Both were “presented by” Steven Spielberg with list songs where everyone from the show got introduced at rapid speed, so it was fun to memorize and sing along.

#7 - Inspector Gadget
Poor animation quality aside, who doesn’t know this theme song?  It probably still haunts your dreams.

#6 - Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers
This theme was rife with late '80s goodness and taught you the noun “gumshoe” meant “detective.”  It was also responsible for many young adults feeling confused about erotic male dancers being named after a chipmunk crime fighting duo.

#5 - TaleSpin
O-we-ae!  O-we-oh!  This song has a kick-ass pseudo-African vibe, which perfectly compliments the reconstituted-Jungle-Book-characters-in-cargo-planes adventures.  The show itself was also awesome, so the theme song prepared you for the awesomeness to follow.

#4 - Goof Troop
You have to love this theme ... it’s got the cheesy '90s faux hip hop thing going for it, and it ends with a scat riff and a gravitas baritone “Yeeeeah.”  Plus, I had a crush on Max, even though he was technically a dog.

#3 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
This song was so catchy that most 30-year-olds would still be able to tell you that Raphael is cool, but rude (give me a break) and Michelangelo is a party dude (partaaaay!).  In conclusion: Heroes in a half shell: turtle power!

#2 - Darkwing Duck
This is the sexiest cartoon theme song ever.  It’s filled with drama, mystery, and female backup singers who say suggestive things like “better watch out, you bad boys!

#1 - Duck Tales
(a woo-oo!)  It’s hard to decide what song should rank first, but this takes the cake ... if only because, personally, whenever I sing it, at least eight people will join in on the “woo”’s in the refrain.  Also, because the show itself was way less cool than the song (how much of those obnoxious duck voices can you stand?).

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a
sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any
problems of plagorism or copyright infringement?

My website has a lot of unique content I've either created myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my permission. Do you know any ways to help prevent content from being ripped off? I'd genuinely appreciate it.

OK maybe my mind isn't as good as I thought but two of those I don't remember as 90's (she-Ra, Inspector gadget), also thought Duck tales was 80's though I'm sure it was still played.

Favorite theme from there? probably TMNT. even though I was out of school I still enjoyed that show.

PS I KNOW Garfield and Friends and Muppet Babies were 80's too. The curse of watching WAY to many cartoons growing up ;)

Captain Planet, he's our hero! Gonna take pollution down to zero! Yeah, that deserves to be on the list. Yay for comments correcting the oversight: the power is yours!

oh man. when i was a kid, my favorite part of watching 'toons was always the intros. i used them as an excuse to dance around the house and do faux-karate (depending on the show). until my sisters came in and accused me of being a weirdo. ah, memories.
